This day comes full-circle.

I woke up to having my BBC downloads slashdotted. Completely unexpectedly. Normally this would be a pleasant surprise, because more readers is always better (even if they're slashdot readers :p). Then I discovered that I was committing copyright infringement, which I am not a fan of. So I had to remove my mirrors, because I didn't want to get into hot water. This was really disappointing to me, because it was my first real, honest-to-goodness front-page-of-slashdot posting and I had to remove the items that got me there to begin with.

I have to admit that even though I wanted my mirrors spread around the Internet, I was a little annoyed by the slashdot posting, because it was completely out of the blue. I like to mentally prepare myself first, even if I actually do nothing to the server itself. Anyway, this is annoyance is ironic because I'm trying to slashdot polyscience.org, tonight, specifically the piece I wrote yesterday. It's been in the submission queue for more than an hour now; I'm waiting to see what happens to it. It'll probably get rejected, because that's what usually happens, but you never know unless you try.

I also figured that I would write a detailed analysis of traffic patterns when a site gets slashdotted, and the residual effects thereof from today. And (ironically) try to get that posted to slashdot as well, because everyone there seems terribly pleased with their ability to bring many websites to a standstill. (But not mine. ) Giving them real bandwidth figures and timeframes so they can see what sort of damage they can do will go over well, I think.

Along those lines, I contacted the BBC tonight to see if I could get permission to continue distributing their symphonies. I know what the answer will be (if I even get one at all): no. But I figured it was worth a try anyway.

On an interesting note, I've had this blog in one form or another for quite a few months now. Since January, really. If you add up all of the months between January and the end of June, there's something like 25,000 page impressions. From the beginning of July up until today (13 days), there's something like 20,000 page impressions. That's pretty crazy. As a result, I went looking for higher-paying advertising. Nothing ridiculous or obtrusive, just some simple advertisement so supplement the (shitty) amount that I've made from Google AdSense. I looked at Netshelter, but they pretty much only want people getting a few million pageviews a month, and I'm nowhere near that. Caesar suggested Burst Media, and they cater to those sites serving up 5,000 pageviews per month or more, which is well within the range of this site right now. I'd like to know how much you can make, though. I do think it'd be better to be paid by impressions rather than clicks. Clicking isn't consistent, and the amount paid per click varies so you can make a lot of money, or none at all. It's really rather hit or miss depending on content and the buyer of the ad that is appearing.

There's a new girl at work, and she's really young, but very good. Better than I was when I first started, but she has one advantage that I didn't when I started: a stable home. Anyway, she looks like she's going to work out well — she's rock steady (so far) when some of our nastier patients give her a hard time. Perhaps it's because she's new. She's a fast learner, too. This is very good. :)
