How-To: Get your Olympus recorder working in Windows 7 and Vista

This article applies to the VN-120PC, VN-240PC, VN-480PC, VN-960PC, VN-2100PC, VN-3100PC, VN-3200PC and VN-4100PC digital audio recorders being used on 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The problem with getting your Olympus digital recorders to work with newer versions of Windows is that Olympus doesn’t provide all of the drivers you need in one place. In the hopes that I can save other frustrated users 20 minutes of wasted time, I’ve provided download links and a short guide to getting your recorder working with versions of Windows newer than XP.

1) Install the original Digital Wave Player software (Olympus link | local mirror)

Installing the original software will not get your device working, but it provides the baseline for the updates that you downloaded.

2) Install the Digital Wave Player update (Olympus link | local mirror)

This will make a green and gray digital recorder icon appear in your System Tray. (32-bit Windows users stop here.)

3) Install the 64-bit Windows drivers (Olympus link | local mirror)

After you’ve completed this step, you should be able to connect your device and transfer the audio files to your computer.

  1. Hi there Rian,

Well I tried and I tried..and I still can’t get the damn thing to work. My hubby built me a new computer with Windows 7 (which I now hate with a passion) and I cannot get the blasted recorder to copy audio files from the recorder on to the PC. I followed your instructions to the letter, and still nothing..HELP!!! What am I doing wrong? Hubby is working away and can’t help. You are my only hope Obi Wan Kenobi..You must be Jedi to get this thing running..(Sorry, couldn’t resist it) But you must be..either you have a direct link with God or you use the FORCE..

    I’m stumpted..I really am..and I need this to work ASAP…

    Regards

  2. Can you be more specific about what’s not working?

Extract DigitalWavePlayer.zip from link 1, then run “Setup”.
Extract and run DWPUP5EN.exe from DigitalWavePlayerUpdate from link 2

Then, depending on whether you have a 32- or 64-bit version of Windows–see link above from Microsoft to help you figure it out–install the 64-bit drivers if you’re running 64-bit Windows.

  3. Hi Rian,

after many hours of searching, trying I have found your page here with instruction. Thanks lot for your help. You save my time and my Olympus recorders life. I was very close to get recorded sounds out by hammer.

    Regards

    Emil

  4.  Thanks a lot for posting this here. I reimaged my laptop without realizing that this software was installed there, and didnt have the original CD.

  5. This post was a great help, thank you. It saved me hours of browsing the Net, fishing for download sites. My Olympus VNH2100PC is now working fine. Since I bought a new PC with Windows 7 (previous one was XP) earlier this year, I have had to go looking for new drives for virtually every gadget I had at home, starting with my printer. It is an extremely time-consuming, not to mentioning irritating task, so thanks a lot for posting this!

  6. I forgot to say I also installed Audacity from your link – I had been meaning to do it for over a year (lol…), so this blog was a one-stop shop for me. :)

  7. Thank you so much for this “How To” I spent a while searching for the answer online and couldn’t find anything. And here you have everything so clear and simple it’s amazing how difficult manufacturers can make things yet how easy users make the same things for one another.

  8. THANK YOU! You saved me from thinking my files would never be able to be tranfered / copied. Great work around!

  9. Hi Rian, I followed the instructions above exactly.  It seems like the software and update all installed successfully (I have the grey and green icon) but when I attach the VN-960 to the PC it still isn’t recognised by the PC.  Any ideas what is going wrong?  I just can’t get the PC to recognise that it’s there.  Thanks in advance.

  10. rian this page was an absolute godsent. you couldn’t have made it any easier and i am absolutely grateful for your creation of this page. thank goodness for people like you. great job.

  11. Rian, THANK YOU…  THANK YOU…  THANK YOU…  And by the way, I spent over an hour on it before I had to step away for awhile before searching again, and 10 minutes later I found your site.  Thank you so much for sharing.

  12. Hi, Rian.  So I’ve done all three steps and I still can’t get the wave player to transfer the files to my PC.  I just got a new computer with Windows 7.  Unfortunately, I’ve always had problems uploading but at the end of the day it would transfer.  I’m having no luck now.  Think you, or anyone else, can offer a solution?

    Thanks.  It’s very much appreciated.

  13. Hello there,

I had the same problem and in the end opted for downloading a virtual XP desktop to my computer. I download everything on that and then drag and drop it on to my Windows 7 desk top. I used this  http://www.virtualbox.org/ You can download the XP desktop from here.
If you have any further problems, let me know.

    Regards

  14. Thanks sooo much!!  I searched and searched and was getting no where fast!!  I followed the steps and started opening some of the files and finally got to the setup and now have a working program to use with my VN-960PC.  Many thanks!

  15. I change the battery on my digital voice recorder vn4100, but the device is not working, I checked the placement of the batteries , what to do ?

  16. Thank you! I couldn’t find the basic Digital Wave Player anywhere on the Olympus website, your post was a lifesaver.

  17.  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I found this voice recorder among my nan’s stuff – she died a few weeks ago and as far as I know these are the only recordings of her voice anywhere so they will be very precious to me and my children!

  18. Hi,

I’ve tried everything but still can’t get it to work. When i run setup on the first link it says the program may not have installed correctly and when I click reinstall using recommended settings it just sends me to the “olympus wave player screen asking which language I want. I click english and nothing else happens. Then when i go to run the second link it gets to near the end and says Digital wave player not installed. I’d be grateful for any advice.

  19. How do u get the recorder to play a file which u input from pc to the recorder? I can’t get that to work either on blackberry or any digital recorder. why?

  20. Thanks from Germany!
It really saved me a lot of time. I can spend this on the other issues I have with instllaing drivers under 64 bit windows

  21. Thank you!  Before finding your post I wasted a lot of time trying to find the player and  updates on the Olympus sites.

  22. Needed to use the Voice Recorder for a training program. Olympus website was not of much help.
Thanks much for providing the links and the sequence of installation. I had installed the #3 and #2 in that order and was stuck since I did not have the original cd anymore.

  23. I don’t understand what to do for a 32 bit processor. It says I can’t install the driver.

  24. Greetings!

I was able to achieve these steps for myself with my 32-bit Windows 7 machine, but I cannot transfer any files from the recorder to the computer.  Nothing happens when I select any of the transfer options.

    Any ideas?

    -Ray.

  25. Dammit I got the olympus DS330, can’t get this to work, and was pretty much told by olympus a 64 bit system will never recognize the device, so I picked up a Newer Sony model today at staples, and what do you know, that isn’t compatible either, back to staples again.

  26. Thank you.  I couldn’t find my software disk and it was driving me crazy.  Just got this running on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine.

  27. He leaves all questions about drivers for 32 bit processor without attention…. pity I need them too…

If you found them, please let me know here. TY

  28. Hello,
I have 32 bit Windows 7 machine. After completing steps 1 and 2 I was still unable to transfer my auido to my PC. Then I go to Control Panel –> System –> Device Manager while my VN480 PC is connected to my PC. There I saw Digital Audio Recorder device. I right clicked and updated the driver. System asks online search or local disk search. I selected online search. It found some driver and npw I can transfer my recordings on my PC.
    I hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  29. I’ve installed the digital wave player but now I don’t know what to do to transfer my audio files from my VN 120pc to my computer.  Can anyone help – I am pretty much computer illiterate!
