How-To: Get your Olympus recorder working in Windows 7 and Vista

This article applies to the VN-120PC, VN-240PC, VN-480PC, VN-960PC, VN-2100PC, VN-3100PC, VN-3200PC and VN-4100PC digital audio recorders being used on 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The problem with getting your Olympus digital recorders to work with newer versions of Windows is that Olympus doesn’t provide all of the drivers you need in one place. In the hopes that I can save other frustrated users 20 minutes of wasted time, I’ve provided download links and a short guide to getting your recorder working with versions of Windows newer than XP.

1) Install the original Digital Wave Player software (Olympus link | local mirror)

Installing the original software will not get your device working, but it provides the baseline for the updates that you downloaded.

2) Install the Digital Wave Player update (Olympus link | local mirror)

This will make a green and gray digital recorder icon appear in your System Tray. (32-bit Windows users stop here.)

3) Install the 64-bit Windows drivers (Olympus link | local mirror)

After you’ve completed this step, you should be able to connect your device and transfer the audio files to your computer.

  1. Very nice of you to post this article.  I was able to upgrade the VN-4100 PC DVR working again with my Win 7 64 Bit OS after downloading and installing the software from the 3 links above.

  2. Thanksa a lot…i was getting frustrated as i have spent about 2 hours trying and searching drivers for my new laptop that works on Windows 7. GREAT POST!!!!!1

  3. FINALLY! I have been trying to get my VN-1400PC to work with Windows 7 for months! Thank you SO much for posting these instructions!

  4. Hi! Many thanks for sharing this. Just sorted it out on Win7 Home premium 64bit. really helpful and clear post, keep up the good job. Cheers, Denis

  5. Many thanks, I have been trying to update this driver with no success but your method worked, thanks again.

  6. I have had problems transferring, too.  Even with the correct software, the recorder and computer  connected with a USB cable, there are times when the transfer function is grayed out.

The solution is to release the hold switch on the recorder before connecting it to the computer.  The switch is on the left side of the VN-240 recorder, and released is down.

    Good luck.

  7. oh shit. wen I rule the world, I’ll have that designer at Olympus and folks at their website group-read these comments continuously until one of them makes this human usable.
    EAT our frustration, Olympus!

  8. THANK YOU RYAN STOCKBOWER! The Olympus site is a hot mess, and I found you while searching the interwebs. I have an Olympus VN-480 that I bought in early 2006, and tried to use it recently and Ye Olde software wouldn’t work for Win 7 64-BIT.  I followed your SIMPLE 3 steps and in under 2 minutes, I am up and running. Everything is updated on my… SIXTY-FOUR BIT machine. Sorry, I’m job hunting at the moment (I record every job interview for a variety of reasons, EVERYONE should) and will definitely bookmark you and donate once I’m employed. You deserve it.  THANKS from NY.

And for those of you whining about your 32-bit Win 7: What possessed you to get 32 bit in the first place?  See the troubles you’re having?  Stop nagging this guy over your silly decisions.

    That is all.

  9. большое огромное С П А С И Б О !!!!!!

  10. will not install. Can’t find ikernel exe. What can I do.  I am so frustrated I want to spank Olympus for being so cheap they will not let you download original CD. I still have the CD but it is in about ten pieces

  11. I have  vn -480-pc recorder and I have 32 bit Windows 7 machine. Running AVast securtity
After completing steps 1 it says in a pop up window the Ikernel cannot be launced  and the program does not install

  12. Thank you! You shouls allow a range of donations…… I would have gone $10 instead of $2 as it was worth that mush to me. Thanks again!

  13. I appreciate that. I chose $2, because I think if you suggest too much, fewer people are likely to donate. I’m glad you got some value from my post, and I appreciate the donation!

  14. I don’t know if you solved that problem, in case you didn’t you have to push first icon of the recorder with a red arrow :transfer all files…

  15. This was a lifesaver. Needed to get the dictaphone working for PHD reserach interviews tomorrow. You are on my acknowledgement list !!!!

  16. Hello!  I have Windows 7, 64-bit.  New computer, never had Digital Wave Player software on it before..  Mine is the Olympus VN-4100PC.   I followed your steps, and I need clarification on some of it.  Step 2 tries to run, but it doesn’t get far – I get a message that says iKernel setup could not work, version not registered..  My windows is legit – came with Dell computer.  This step seems to not be working at all.

Also, when I click the third link, that file contains six different applications, by the names of DPUP5EN,  DPUP5ES, DPUP5FR,  DPUP5DR, DPUP5IT, DPUP5RU. I could try all of them, but not sure this is a good idea.

  17. Hello. If you use avast antivirus turn it off for the time you running the update. It helped me.

  18. So thankful to have found this info – I was on the verge of giving up and going off to buy yet another voice recorder to use with my shiny new 64-bit laptop.  Now I don’t need to! So 2 bucks is cheap at the price. Cheers!

  19.  Dear Rian, Your information did the trick. Thus, I have successfully extracted some files from my Olympus VN-1000PC Voice Recorder after installing the driver you provided in step 1 onto my Windows XP SP2 machine. Thank you so much!!! Bas

  20. This is driving me insane! I’m useless with computers so I might be doing it wrong. I’ve downloaded the files, clicked on setup and the Olympus window opened and asked what language I wanted so I selected English (UK) but then nothing happened. Any ideas? I’m doing interviews for my PhD tomorrow!

  21. Thank you a million times over! After trying for days your post made so much sense and it worked!

  22. I have this VN-3100PC voice recorder and the CD that worked with windows XP, but now I have win 7 and I don’t know how to make it work.
I downloaded all three things you mentioned in your post, but I cannot pass step 1, it won’t work. It says “The InstallShield Engine could not be launched. Interface not registered”. Any ideas, please?

  23. Once I deactivated the avast antivirus, everything went just fine.
Thank you so much Rian for your post!
    Regards!

  24. Thank you, I have spent weeks trying to get any help from Olympus!  All downloaded safe and sound!

  25.  you need to go into device manager and uninstall the drivers, select to delete all drivers when asked,
then after that go to the folder where you have downloaded the drivers and reinstall.
that is what i had to do, as i kept installing them before doing the above. but was getting no where even though it kept telling me that the drivers installed correctly.

i will never buy another Olympus though not after all the trouble i have had with this its a night mare to get working

  26.  the DPUP5EN is english
    the DPUP5FR, is french
    DPUP5RU is russian
    DPUP5IT is italian.

    hope this helps

  27. I run the three steps and still I canot transfer   I know I am doing something wrong please help me

  28. Hi, if anyone’s still checking this! Have followed all the steps, and I’ve still got greyed out boxes on the DWP, so can’t transfer files. I’m using a VN-3100PC on windows 7. I read to try uninstalling all the drivers before installing the 64bit one, but I can’t see any drivers on device manager to uninstall. What should I be looking for?

    Thanks!

    Victoria

  29. Hey. Where/how do you delete the olympus specific drivers? When I look up device manager I can’t see anything related to the olympus…
