How-To: Get your Olympus recorder working in Windows 7 and Vista

This article applies to the VN-120PC, VN-240PC, VN-480PC, VN-960PC, VN-2100PC, VN-3100PC, VN-3200PC and VN-4100PC digital audio recorders being used on 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The problem with getting your Olympus digital recorders to work with newer versions of Windows is that Olympus doesn’t provide all of the drivers you need in one place. In the hopes that I can save other frustrated users 20 minutes of wasted time, I’ve provided download links and a short guide to getting your recorder working with versions of Windows newer than XP.

1) Install the original Digital Wave Player software (Olympus link | local mirror)

Installing the original software will not get your device working, but it provides the baseline for the updates that you downloaded.

2) Install the Digital Wave Player update (Olympus link | local mirror)

This will make a green and gray digital recorder icon appear in your System Tray. (32-bit Windows users stop here.)

3) Install the 64-bit Windows drivers (Olympus link | local mirror)

After you’ve completed this step, you should be able to connect your device and transfer the audio files to your computer.

  1. Found something, that maybe could help others. Initially the system didn’t recognize the recorder, driver was not properly installed, etc.. I set the software to automatic download when recorder is connected. Then closed everything down, disconnected the recorder and connected it to another USB port. My cranky old 64 bit Win7 muttered something about the driver not being installed, but then the auto startup of the digital wave player kicked in and it worked like a charm.

  2. Huge thanks – saved my bacon at a conference I had to record, and found I was running out of memory on the voice recorder.

  3. I am trying to figure out how to take an Olympus Digital Wave recording from the program folder and transfer it to a CD. Is there an online tutorial

    Thanks
    Chuck

  4. I recently brought my Olympus VN-2100PC out of storage for the first time in years and was stuck at the Olympus support site with not being able to locate the original Digital Wave Player software to transfer the files to my laptop. This was the best $2 I have spent in a long time! Thanks for putting these instructions together!

  5. Thank you. I mean, THANK YOU!!!! You saved me – and saved me from further frustration, for which I am just as grateful, if not more so, than being able to (finally) get my files!
    MUCH appreciation!
    Kim

  6. Hi there
I followed the above steps and I seem to be able to open the recorder but I was wondering if anyone’s shows with all the other drives in the hard disk drives list? Thanks so much.

  7. At long last I was successful in transferring the files from my old VN-600PC.
    Many thanks.
    Sándor

  8. You saved me a lot of time, thank you. It’s the only instructions/links that’s made my Olympus recorder worth using again.

  9. THANK YOU!!! This post and Quindana’s comment (which made my computer recognize the recorder at last) saved me from losing files and getting in trouble at work.

  10. Your advice worked like a charm on my home computer. Perhaps you have a suggestion how to install on my work computer w/ Adobe Pro… the files aren’t compatible.
Either way, thank you so much for this article! Wish all technical directions were this “user friendly”.

    PS: I donated

  11. Adobe Pro: answered my own question. For those of you have issues opening w Adobe Pro, click “Open with” then use Windows instead of Adobe.

    Thanks again!

  12. Hi. I’m having problems transferring files from my dictaphone to the laptop. I’ve followed the above instruction without success. When I open up the digital wave player program and connect the dictaphone to the laptop, what should I do? Folders A, B, C and D all appear to be blank. If this is being picked up properly, then it would show the audio files under A, B, C and D wouldn’t it? Thanks.

  13. I can’t get wave player to work on 64 bit machine with Windows 8. Any help? All Olympus did was give me links to 64 bit Windows 7. I see my recorders folders but not the files in them. Thanks.

  14. Wow, I’ve been trying to find a way to get this to work for a couple years now. Thank you! $2 coming your way.

  15. Thx very much, after looking more then 50 sites where you download only spam you have the right one.Again thanks very much

  16. Hi Adam,

I am looking for an olympus DSS player which would work on Windows-7 32/64 bit….please help me

  17. How do I set to where I want to download files to a specific folder on my computer using the Olympus software? It just seems to dump them in the Documents folder ??

  18. Thanks. You have saved my day (although not the 20 minutes frustration…), and deserved much more than the 2$ you suggest as a donation.
Just one thing, in case it helps others: because in my family we are trilingual, I tried to install the wave player in UK English, and although I got the mesage that the instalation had succeeded, it hadn’t. After several trials I installed the Spanish version (Spanish is the language of my OS), and everything went OK.

  19. Sort of worked for me running Windows 8 but 2 things: 1) I had to make a few adjustments as it didn’t match exactly with my Windows 8 setup. 2) The photos downloaded until the same exact point as before. For whatever reason, Photo Stream stopped downloading at 479 pics and I thought something went wrong with the app so I found this site and after following the instructions, I thought it fixed the problem and was continuing where it left off. Instead it created a Photo Stream subfolder inside my original Photo Stream folder and downloaded the exact same pics and stopped at the same exact amount. so I have duplicate pics but only 479 of them even though I have almost 5000 pics on the cloud. I have no idea why it stopped & how I can get it to download the rest of my photos :(

I will outline the difference of what I did from the instructions here in case it might help someone. under the 1 – 13 FIX,

    4. I didn’t see Apple Photostreams Uploader nor Downloader. Instead I ended the process for Apple Outlook DAV Config (32…

    7. I had to dig around to find the MediaStream folder. For me it was in AppData –> Roaming –>Apple Computer–>MediaStream

    8. I could not just delete everything in the MediaStream folder because I kept getting the message that some folders were in use. I went into Task Manager and ended all task that I could see related to iCloud and apple.

    9. I just reboot and followed the rest of the instructions and it worked…so I thought…until it hit 479 pics.

  20. I keep getting an error that says, “An unexpected communication error occurred with VN-4100PC.”

I am not familiar at all with this recorder. MUST be able to get recordings off of it; child custody issue hangs on what was recorded. My computer is running Windows 7, 64 bit, so I downloaded and installed all 3 in order.

HELP! Guardian ad Lidem wants this by tomorrow!

  21. Keep getting an error saying “unexpected communication error”. Help!!! Child custody issue rides on what was recorded on here. Not my recorder, was ex-husbands so I had no cable, no software, etc.! Guardian ad Lidem wants this tomorrow!!!

  22. I have an Olympus W-10 recorder. I found an Olympus web page that states that it’s not compatible with Windows7… see http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_faqs.asp?id=894#14 but I don’t know how old that advice is. Would the drivers you located for the ‘VN’ recorders be at all likely to work with the W-10. The W-10 Voice Album software loads fine but the recorder’s files are not seen when I attach to USB… thanks in advance…

  23. Saved me a lot of time with precise instructions and download links.
    Recorder works great.
    Thank you!!!!!

  24. I am wanting to play archived dss files. i have followed your instructions (thank you very much), but can’t see how to import the dss files into the player. Can anyone help?

  25. I installed 1 & 2 on my PC. Operating system is windows7 , 32 bit
the following error occured on the file ‘C:\windows\system32\VNUSB.dll’. Access denied (0X5)

when I say “ignore” I get dialogue box DW90USB.dll

then software opens : green and gray digital recorder icon is not appearing in System Tray. And no recorded file are seen to transfer. Please Advise

  26. Thank you so much. After downloading & copying .dll file , VN-4100 started working. Really wonderful. Recorder was lying at home but has rebirth now !
    You made my Day !

  27. I have an Olympus VN4100PC recorder and just acquired a new desktop running Windows 10.
Has anyone come up with a way to make Digital Wave Player work on Win-10?
Or as an alternative, is there some other program that I can download the recorded files from the VN4100PC to my desktop?
This recorder has been good to me for years and I’d hate to have to give it up.

  28. Thank you for keeping clean software available for download WITHOUT CONTAINING Viruses, etc. Very glad to donate the $2.

  29. Keith did you find a solution? I’m in exactly the same boat and would really rather not loose my trusted VN-480PC

  30. reference of Gloria, is printed does not operate already

After several frustrating visits to the Olympus website and running around in circles… told me I had to purchase the CD-ROM, but then no longer stocked the CD-ROM – your instructions worked like an absolute charm. My computer now recognizes my recorder and I can create and download files. Sending you love, peace and harmony, with blessings for your life as appropriate. 31. Thank you – I bought an Olympus Voice Recorder and could not the connection to my PC. Your recommended solution worked perfectly – many thanks. Roger.

  32. A tip for other users: I could not install UK English version on my Windows 7 64bit machine (Danish user interface), it kept exiting to Windows.

However, thanks to Ana B’s comment, I tried the off-chance of installing in Spanish, and then found out that the US English install also worked! (just not the UK one)

The remaining instructions worked and now everything is up and running!

Thanks a bunch rianjs and Ana B!
